Web Applications Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for power users of web applications. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm looking for some popular ("actively maintained" + many plugins) forum software (PHP+MySQL). And, what's important, I need it to have some de-noisified skin/theme available for free (with "user joined on (date)"/"232 posts in thread"/"user likes: carrots" crap removed).

  • The FruitShow would sound nice, but it looks abandoned (last release, 0.7, from 2007).
  • I've also tried to make a custom skin for phorum - generally working, but too rough around the edges, and I don't have time to push it to perfection; also, I'm not fond of some more detailed choices taken by phorum authors, and again I don't have time to develop plugins to overcome them.
  • I tried to approach skinning phpBB, but that looked harder than for phorum, AFAI recall.
  • I've seen vanillaforums recommended here and there, but still looks too noisy for me (and looking through the themes, they all seem to display the same amount of information, only with differing visuals, probably just some modified CSS).

I'd be grateful for any suggestions!

Ah, from one of the threads I mentioned myself in the question, the bbPress looks interesting. Need to test it. For reference, some themes can be previewed at http://bbshowcase.org/forums/view/available-themes, though the in-thread-view looks quite minimal already, and there might be something more to reduce in app's settings - will have to check.
