There are lots of recommendation services for books, or music, or movies. Is there any service that unifies these, so that if I rate some movies I can get recommendations for books?

meta-question: recommentation on a recommendation service. – Robert Munteanu Jul 2 '10 at 15:06

Try Hunch. Interesting project where people collectively create series of questions that will help you pick virtually anything.

Hunch does seem to be generic, however it does not simply give a book recommendation, it will first ask you to narrow your requirements to something like American-English, post-apocalyptic, allegorical, non-violent, sci-fi, and then give some recommendations. – Liam Jul 6 '10 at 15:01

amazon comes close. if you rate somewhere something, search for "something" on amazon and then you see what other people who were interested in "something" actually bought as well.

Can you do this without buying stuff from amazon? – Liam Jul 27 '10 at 17:54
yes, you can read ratings of other folks who have bought something. – akira Jul 27 '10 at 18:37

There is a Y Combinator startup

DirectedEdge "Or recommendations engine plugs intoy your store or site to deliver Amazon-like recommendations"

This is a generic tool but for developers.

Google Prediction API can be used as a generic recommendation service.
