Web Applications Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for power users of web applications. It's 100% free, no registration required.

For example, if I search "pharmacy" I get a map with local results as well as the regular results. Some searches that would be useful to have local results do not have maps automatically (user can still click Places under the More drop down link).

How does Google decide when to show the map and when not to?

Unless some one from Google comes along and provides a definitive answer all we can do is speculate and make guesses. –  ChrisF Jan 12 '11 at 11:52
