I'm using NetNewsWire to check my RSS feeds, but I don't want to subscribe to new feeds through it. I've been in tens of sites where you click "Subscribe to RSS feed" and it takes me to a website that makes me choose which service I use - I click "Google Reader", then "Add to Google Reader" and that's it, I'm in. But since I installed NetNewsWire, It just takes me to the application so I can subscribe - I like the old behavior better.

Is there any way to get back to basics? I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.6.

Any suggestion would be appreciated!

There's a preference pane in Mail.app called "RSS" –> this is where you set the default handling app for RSS feeds. Reset that to Safari and you're probably back where you started.

I tried that. I used it to switch to Safari but it takes me to the Safari Built-in RSS manager. Not where I can add my subscriptions to Google Reader and such. – AeroCross Jan 29 '11 at 15:32
You could also try to install the bookmarklet from Google Reader? such as googlereader.blogspot.com/2005/11/… – don el ka nal Jan 29 '11 at 19:55

You can use RCDefaultApp to manage what applications open which url:// types, among other things. Removing NetNewsWire's association with the rss:// URL type will solve your problem.

I've been using RCDefaultApp for a long time and I tried that right away before asking the question. When switching to Safari, it shows the default Safari RSS manager, not the one I'm talking about. I also tried <default> and <none>, and nothing. I also tried modifying the .rss extension and the feed:// and feeds:// URL's and nothing. I remember something about feedburner, but it's not working, because when I subscribed to both XKCD and CAD, it took me there, but now, I can't. What about Reader Notifier? It claims to provide the same sort of integration that Gmail Notifier provides. Once you install Reader Notifier you should be able to directly select Google Reader as your default RSS application.

This is a strange problem -- I wonder if perhaps the feed links on the websites you're visiting have changed? I also know that Firefox 3 used a "pick your reader" interface when you click plain RSS or Feed links.

For some strange reason, I can't link my Google Account to the application you sent. I could, in some way, solve my problem. Yet, if that application can solve my problem, then RCDefault app could, too. Thanks for the suggestion though - it'd be a life-saver if it weren't for NetNewsWire (yet, too much refreshing would make my life miserable - I'd be always reading blogs, never working). – AeroCross Jan 31 '11 at 2:11
