Web Applications Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for power users of web applications. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Almost each and every blog I have seen has a sidebar on the right. Older websites used to have all information including navigation on left, even modern websites are like this but not blogging websites. Why is that so. Is there any reason why I should not put all the meta, navigation and advertisements on left hand side?

No reason, except that all your visitors will expect to see them on the right hand side where they are in most other blogs.

it depends on two reason: 1: language of your blog if your blog language is left to right, then user will intend to read left content more that right,so what you want to be highlighted or main set it in left. in case of right to left language (urdu) right pane is inmportant

and second one its all depends on your taste.
