I often put files in my public Dropbox folder and send the public link to people by email. Is there a way to get some sort of report of how often files were accessed? Or is it possible to know the number of downloads?

At present (February 2011) this is not possible to do in Dropbox. It is on the wish list though.

Thank you for the link! I've added some of my votes to it. :) for all who also are intested in this feature: please vote it up on Dropbox. – splattne Feb 22 '11 at 11:44

You could use a URL shortener (such as bit.ly or goo.gl) to create a link to the Dropbox public link and get the stats from the URL shortener service.

If your file is a .exe file (and maybe other types), bit.ly will warn the user that the file 'is potentially dangerous', which may stop your user from downloading the file. I myself distrust sites that make you download a .exe file without giving you the file extension in the link (like a shortened url), so I decided not to use bit.ly for that, I will have to zip the .exe an re-upload the file. – Marcel Valdez Orozco May 6 at 13:57
