Is there a good webapp that lets you track grocery items for your home? More specifically, I'm looking for inventory management and shopping list functionality.

Update: It seems like most of the answers simply use task-list webapps that people are treating as shopping lists. That's fine, and it's interesting to see what webapps people use to solve this issue, but I'm also looking for webapps that are specifically designed for grocery/inventory management. So, for example, when you "use up" an item in your inventory, and the count reaches 0, it will automatically add it to your shopping list. You should also be able to see a list of things you have on hand and such.

"webapp" .. not "website" :) – akira Jul 3 '10 at 7:22

@akira - while I agree with the distinction, we might find that the wider public doesn't really see the difference. We are going to have to allow some leeway in the terminology used. From the description this is clearly a webapp. – ChrisF Jul 3 '10 at 10:05
Good question. I've been looking at webapp and iPhone options. I second your edit regarding something that isn't a generic task list app. – Rebecca Chernoff Jul 9 '10 at 1:56
My wife and I created a map/template of our local grocery store, aisle by aisle and the foods in those aisles. We save a ton on time and cost because our list prevents us from going down aisles that we don't need anything from. We can grocery shop for our family of 4 rather quickly. – Brian Jul 13 '10 at 17:32
How would you tell if you used up an item though ? With RememberTheMilk I think the best you can get is to change the priority of the task and use as a scale of availability – phwd Jul 16 '10 at 5:32

It might have too many features for your needs, but you should take a look at Remember The Milk.

@phwd: Wow, seems like there are lots of (sometimes very complicated) ways to accomplish this, but as one of the posters in that thread says: "Just having a list has always worked well enough for me. Any fancier and it doesn't get written down and kept up." At least that's my personal opinion as well. – fretje Jul 3 '10 at 12:56

It's not specifically for groceries, and has no inventory management, but I use Zenbe Lists. It has an intuitive web interface and iPhone app.

I just use Simplenote to keep plain text grocery lists and recipe ideas synched to my iPod touch effortlessly. There are also synching desktop clients like Notational Velocity.

There's the general app for building lists called TaDa Lists. Not specific for groceries, but very minimalistic. You might check it out.

Check out Ziplist.

Interesting question. I've wondered the same thing, especially as one of my ideas for a web-app is essentially to build what you're asking for. The trouble with it for me is, besides using an iPhone and it's camera for input, there doesn't seem to be a way to make this "user-friendly." I'm sure there is, by someone more capable than myself, but I do plan to take a stab at it "someday" (which we all know how that works).

Now, to actually answer. During my research I've been looking for any apps that do this, "research the competition". All I have found so far are:

However, I don't think either one meets your running-inventory requirements. I could be wrong because I haven't really tried them out yet.

Please do reply if you find something that meets your needs.
