I want to start an email group, but can't find anything besides mailman and google groups. Is there something better/simpler? Preferably hosted.

Yahoo! Groups can be used for small mailing lists/groups. |

I strongly recommend Nabble. Its one of the best email groups I have ever seen. Major open source projects host their mailing lists on Nabble - e.g., R, OSGeo, PostgreSQL etc. It's Free, Simple and Embeddable. Also it provides web-interface to post questions to mailing lists provided you register on Nabble and subscribe to the mailing list. One can have online profile on Nabble as well. Search features are excellent. |

Check out Librelist which is a simple way to set up and host a mailing list. Under the hood Librelist uses Lamson as a mail server. |
