How do I show my name in Gmail instead of the email address that appears when logged into the account?

Having been the victim of identity theft, I don't want my email address to show after I have signed into Gmail. I only want the name to appear as I use my laptop in public place.

  • example2@gmail.com - Mary Smith should appear
  • 77example@gmail.com = Joe Citizen should appear as the name here

Since this is a common name, if there are numbers or an additional letter needed to be added to the last name, that's okay.

I also only want my name to appear when I'm using it out of the country as well.

How do I do this? I've tried to use Gmail Hide and can't get it to work.

Also, FYI it's not a good habit to get into of posting your email address unciphered in public forums (i.e. here). Spambots and spyders can harvest your name/email, and lead to spam or worse. – mfg Mar 29 '11 at 21:02
I think we really need much more information in order to help you. – Al Everett Mar 30 '11 at 17:27
Newer versions of Gmail do not show the user's email address, but rather just the name (if anything). Suggest that this question is too localized. – Al Everett Aug 11 '12 at 21:52
