Is there available an open source photo organizer app that lets you upload and organize all your images, much like Photobucket and similar services?

Mainly, I want to get away from an a file share of images that's difficult to browse and categorize. Instead, I prefer to upload, tag, and provide descriptions. Images would also be available by individual URL. Then, allow me to browse by tag or search by keyword. I'd like to run on my own server to keep the data private.

I found three which you can host on your own server, but I'm not sure about open source:

I've used Gallery before and found it pretty good –  Marc Roberts Jul 6 '10 at 18:48

Gallery is open source, yes. –  x3ja Jul 7 '10 at 0:41

Assuming you want it to be open source so you can host it yourself, I've seen quite a few people use WordPress for that. It has a photo gallery built in, and there are quite a few plug-ins as well.

If you don't mind Java then Jalbum and its many, many skins ticks (nearly) all of your boxes.

The nearly is because it is only partly open source, not sure of the extent of the closed source

You might look at Zenphoto - I used to use it, it's a pretty nice application that you can self-host. There's a lot of customizability via themes and plugins.

It is open-source, based on PHP and MySQL, and quite easy to use.

Love Gallery. Not quite as easy as PicasaWeb or Flickr but if you're into self-hosting it won't be anything you can't handle.

You could try http://piwigo.org/

It has an active community and has plugins to extend it's functionality.

excellent tool, exactly what I needed, and very well done. –  neofutur Nov 27 '12 at 11:02

There is an iPad app named sortshots which can be helpful to you as it is quicker and easier to retrieve images through photo and video tagging.

Tagging options include personalized keywords, ratings, favourites, or type of media – photo or video. Tapping on a tag provides instant results so that we can further refine our search with additional tags and keywords.

I always liked Flickr's organizer... although if memory serves it was a bit slow.
