Web Applications Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for power users of web applications. It's 100% free, no registration required.

actually, this question is similar to File manager app with per user access control : there were no answers to that one.

I am not asking this question without prior work, I have tested more than 30 apps from github and sourceforge. Tiring doesn't begin to describe it.

Now, I'm looking for a file manager script that can allow me specific user access to folders, within a specific sub folder of my account. Simple enough right?

I'm on a shared hosting account, and most scripts I found have an option where my client can see ALL the folders on my account, above and beyond the their sub-folder.

The closest I got was Quixplorer, but the program does not seem to run due to one error or the other. First there was a blank screen, and now, I can't go past the login page. It works fine on my localhost, but on the server, entering username and password simply redirects back the login page. It's frustrating.

So, people, I'm sick of talking to Googlebot. Have any of you ever faced this situation in the real world? What program did you use? My customer is not paying for this, so I can't buy anything. It has to be a open-source(cough I mean free cough). Please help!

I'm looking into this too, the biggest problem is a few lines of PHP code can do just this, but with a pesky upload limit of 50mb. (And ain't it just hilarious how even pro bono clients can't be bothered to install friggin' Filezilla without them inviting you to their homes to show them how it's done on the spot??)

For the moment, I have concluded the only easy way (meaning without going through setup steps like manually declaring stuff in cgi-bin) is a fullblown FTP client which you better add a few layers of protection to.

cFTP (http://code.google.com/p/clients-oriented-ftp/downloads/list) seems to do just that, though you will be needing to make a new database for the user accounts. There are some others around too, just google for open source client ftp managers, but I'll agree they are overkill.

thanks for answering! well, ftp is just out of the question in this case. i obviously can't give my client access to my cPanel to create new user accounts on ftp and set permissions... there are other sites on that account, and the client wants that ability... so browser based file managers are the only way out... – aditya menon Jul 14 '11 at 6:26
I actually did get quixplorer to run on my server. however, just like you said, there's a 50MB upload limit, and the server admins are smart enough to preempt any simple php.ini changes to upgrade the limit :( so this is unusable... – aditya menon Jul 14 '11 at 6:28
