Are there any good, free and open source alternatives to Google Reader? I'm looking for something that I can download and host on my own website/hosting service.

Can you clarify? You're looking for an RSS client you can host? Like, you want a web page that's an aggregate of a bunch of feeds? Or you want a client that users can download? – goblinbox Jun 25 '11 at 20:11
I apologize for being unclear. I'm looking for an open source and web based RSS client, that I can log in to and manage all my RSS feeds in. Just like Google Reader. – Daniel Jonsson Jun 25 '11 at 20:15

Try Tiny Tiny RSS.

Tiny Tiny RSS is an open source web-based news feed (RSS/Atom) aggregator, designed to allow you to read news from any location, while feeling as close to a real desktop application as possible.

I tried Tiny Tiny RSS and it looks really cool. But sadly it requires open_basedir to be off, which it isn't on the hosting service that I use. – Daniel Jonsson Jun 26 '11 at 6:16

I just found selfoss. http://selfoss.aditu.de/ I'm installing it now on my own server and the feeds are now updating, so I can't vouch for the feed management, but I can tell already that a lot of work has been put into the design of the app even down to the implementation of keyboard shortcust. Additionally, there are mobile apps, but again, I haven't tried them yet.

LinkPass.NET is yet another Online Feed Reader. Its really simple and fast. Moreover, it shows "Trending Now" info, which is very interesting.

I'd suggest checking out NewsBlur.

There is a hosted version, but you can also run it on your own. All the code is open-sourced on GitHub.

Nothing beats Thunderbird as desktop client. Superb Searching and Intelligent offline mode gives me always time to read my favorite blogs even offline. ! In fact I found your Question in Thunderbird Reader Only!!!!
