Are there any good, free and open source alternatives to Google Reader? I'm looking for something that I can download and host on my own website/hosting service.

I just found selfoss. http://selfoss.aditu.de/ I'm installing it now on my own server and the feeds are now updating, so I can't vouch for the feed management, but I can tell already that a lot of work has been put into the design of the app even down to the implementation of keyboard shortcust. Additionally, there are mobile apps, but again, I haven't tried them yet. |

LinkPass.NET is yet another Online Feed Reader. Its really simple and fast. Moreover, it shows "Trending Now" info, which is very interesting. |

I'd suggest checking out NewsBlur. There is a hosted version, but you can also run it on your own. All the code is open-sourced on GitHub. |
