Web Applications Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for power users of web applications. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am trying to find a web based document commenting tool that will allow people to upload documents so that other can view and comment on them.

It would be great if it was open source so that it could be deployed on an internal server.

I remember seeing such a tool a few months back which impressed me, however I can't remember what it was called, all I remember was that their site claimed that the tool got used a lot for refining legal documents.

I found the almost perfect example of what I'm looking for, the Django Book. Hopefully this will narrow the field a little better.

I am using Google Docs and Microsoft Office Live Space, and both are free.

There are many options that I'm aware of, and probably some beyond that too.

As for something you can host yourself, that's open source, I'd check out the Community Edition of Alfresco.

Now, if you can stand not to host it and don't require it be open source, then take a look a Google Docs.

Finally, if you're a keen masochist, there's always Sharepoint. In fairness to SP, it's been a while since I dealt with it. But my perception was that it provided a lot of fancy functionality, that was held together with software popsickle sticks and glue. But, hey, that may make ya happy.

SP has gotten a lot better in the 2010 version... – Leonard Woody Jul 4 '11 at 17:01
I seriously hope so... Particularly in terms of the plumbing of it. I couldn't believe how insane it used to be with certain alterations or even basic generic needs, like migration to other servers. Glad to hear it's apparently improved. – The White Phoenix Jul 4 '11 at 17:03
Alfresco look promising, however I really need something simpler (sorry to be a pain). I will be trying to encourage colleagues to jump on board with this. I found an excellent example of what I need djangobook.com/about/comments but I can't find anything that does that. – thomas Jul 5 '11 at 9:29
Yeah, that comment system has caught my eye for a while, I don't know of a pre-made tool that allows annotations like that, but I'll post here if I find one - please do the same yourself! – The White Phoenix Jul 5 '11 at 15:18
