Web Applications Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for power users of web applications. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Some time ago there was an advanced type of Google search, accessible via left panel (more search tools and time period limiting). The results of latest was almost realtime, and there was an autoupdater (new statuses were printed at top).

Now I can't find this feature. How can I do a realtime Twitter search? The search.twitter.com asks me to refresh:

8 more results since you started searching. Refresh to see them.

I remember reading that Google had to stop the twitter searches... Although I could be wrong... –  Kyle Jul 8 '11 at 17:20

@Kyle is right. This isn't available anymore; the agreement has expired and won't be renewed in its current form: dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=22070 –  Shinrai Jul 8 '11 at 17:27

As for realtime searches, plenty of 3rd party clients do that. (I won't post an answer because this question isn't really ontopic for SU.) –  Shinrai Jul 8 '11 at 17:28

You can do this with TweetDeck. Create a custom column for your search and it will update in real time.

Take a look at monitter.

Monitter is a real time twitter search tool that enables you to monitor a set of keywords on twitter. It also allows you to narrow the search to a particular geographic location, allowing you to find out what’s going onin a particular part of the world.

As other answer(s) have mentioned, the Google realtime search is no longer available for commercial reasons. You could try the Bing social search instead.

I get "We did not find any Social results or links for Harry Potter" from your link –  osgx Jul 8 '11 at 19:55

Strange, it worked for me. I edited the link to point to the main Search page for Social, you can enter a search term and the realtime updates will be shown on the lower part of the page. –  OrbWeaver Jul 8 '11 at 19:58

at the main page I got another error. autotranslated from turkish "We're sorry. Search in social networks in the service of Bing available in this location. To gain access to search in social networks in the service of Bing, change the location in the United States. Note. Relocation will affect all the pages of the service Bing. To change the location in the future, please visit bing.com and click a location in the upper right corner." –  osgx Jul 8 '11 at 20:27

Oh well, I guess they must be restricting it by location then. If you can somehow convince Bing that you are somewhere else, it should show a realtime-updating list of tweets. –  OrbWeaver Jul 8 '11 at 20:59

Google "canceled" their Twitter realtime search recently: http://blog.tweetsmarter.com/twitter-search/google-contract-with-twitter-expires-suspends-realtime-search/

Maybe they want to "push" Google+? ;)

As I understand it, it was a contractual issue. Though I doubt any such decision between two such behemoths could be boiled down to such simplistic conditions. –  music2myear Jul 8 '11 at 17:54

So, what realtime twitter search with autoupdate (push) can you recommend? –  osgx Jul 8 '11 at 18:07
