How do you move rows in a Google Document table? The obvious thing - selecting the entire row, cut, paste - does something very strange (inserts the row as a single cell with a nested table containing the cut row).

You can:

  1. Insert a new table row at the new location for the existing row.
  2. One cell at a time, cut and paste cell contents from the old row to the new row.
  3. Delete the old row.

This is obviously not a great solution, but it might be better than recreating the entire table from scratch?

Currently you can cut and paste entire rows without problem. You still have to manually insert a blank row prior to pasting. This is idiotic for a mature product. – glenviewjeff Jun 18 '14 at 14:49

This is the method that works in 2013/2014:

  • Select a row by its left-side row number.
  • Go to the edit menu > Click "move row up"

In my Google Document (not Spreadsheet), I don't see a "Move Row Up" menu option in either the Edit menu or the Table menu (even when the insertion point is in a cell in my table). – Jon Schneider Feb 14 '14 at 15:59
Looks like that option only shows up when you have the row selected via the left-hand side row number (which selects the whole row) – Kzqai Feb 14 '14 at 17:22
the original question above is (at least as far as I can tell) about Google Documents, not Google Spreadsheets. Is there a way to do what you're suggesting in a non-Spreadsheet document? – Jon Schneider Feb 14 '14 at 22:12

The short answer is you can't. You will have to recreate the table manually.

You used to be able to manually edit the table in your Google Doc using HTML view but this functionality has been removed.

You can copy table to google spreadsheets, move row there and then select it and click on "Web Clipboard" button (fourth from the left between paint and redo), copy. And then via this button put it back to you google document. Also not very great, but saves time.
