I'm looking for a simple event calendar web application or widget that I can create events in using common rules like:

  1. 6pm every Monday
  2. The first Saturday of the month
  3. Every other Thursday on the month
  4. 5-7pm, September 01, 2011

Google Calendar does this fine and lets you view the events for any given day. However, I'm looking for a simple, dedicated web application (e.g. think doodle.com) that focuses mainly on showing you what's happening on the day you visit the site.

So, for example, I put a bunch of events into this calendar. Then when I visit the page it shows me what's happening today in big font, right in my face. If I want to see the full calendar I can, but that's off to the side.

Are there any web applications that do this out of the box? If not, would it be possible to create something like this using, for example, Blogger and Google Calendar?

EDIT

Since the calendar is the main feature here I am looking to display plenty of info with each event. Think of a calendar for a dance/music venue. You'd want to be able to quickly see the cover, location, and description for an event.

I did not make this clear in my original post.

You can do that with Google Calendar as well, just set the default view to day and you are set.

  1. Go to Calendar settings

  2. In the General tab look for Default view and set it to day (it's somewhere at the middle of the page) enter image description here

No, see my updated print screen. In Default view you have 5 options, the first one being Day. – Alex Aug 4 '11 at 11:21
I still can't find it. The "Google Embeddable Calendar Helper" only shows Week, Month, and Agenda, and the general "Calendar Details" page does not have an option for default view. I know Google does maintain different versions of its web apps for different users, so we may just be looking at different things. In any case, I've accepted this answer seeing it's the best option I've come across so far. Do you know of any other options that take into the account the edit I made to my original question? – Nick Chammas Aug 4 '11 at 21:13

If you want to create a web application yourself, the JQuery FullCalendar Plugin is probably the closest to what you're looking for: http://arshaw.com/fullcalendar/

However you'll need to hack it up a bunch to do what you want.

If you want to use an existing web application, www.ticketfly.com seems similar to what you're trying to do.
