I have 1000 unsorted, untagged bookmarks that I want to upload to a service and have it automatically and intelligently tag all of the bookmarks by the category they best fit with. I could then adjust it later. But it seems the bookmark services just suggest tags. Does any bookmark fully automate everything from one upload?

I looked at Xmarks.com, Delicious.com, Diigo.com and Springpad.com, but didn't notice this ability.

Update: Delicious can tag bookmarks, but only of sites that have already been tagged by its users. Is there any service that uses more extensive data to get more accurate tagging?

There's enough data in the website's description, its text, links and from social bookmarking sites to do this pretty well, I would think someone would have done this, no? – Ari Aug 5 '11 at 14:11

I want it to take unsorted bookmarks and categorize them in any way, either by tags or folder. I think tags are more flexible though since each bookmark can then have multiple tags. – Ari Aug 29 '11 at 0:30
Would be great if the site/app could merge several bookmark lists into one unique, hierarchically sorted list. – Itamar Aug 31 '11 at 13:25

You may want to check Skloog. I haven't used it but I checked the demo pages; there seems to be Sorting functionality.

I think it just means you can sort it by what it already has, it doesn't do it automatically: skloog.com/help.cfm#23 : Bookmarks may be sorted in the following ways: Most recent Popular Name Category – Ari Aug 5 '11 at 14:09

You may wish to look at the SortPlaces Firefox extension. According to its extensions home page:

SortPlaces is also designed to work with the SyncPlaces extension to automatically sort your bookmarks when you synchronise them.

However, I'm not sure that it will perform the automatic categorization that you appear to be looking for.

I have been looking up any related research and all the sources I have found seem to have only theoretical examples. One research paper lists Delicious (which you mentioned) as a real world service example, but the other related work seems to be theoretical or things that have been abandoned since.

There's also a paper on a Firefox extension called HyperBK, which seems to have some implications on the possibility of sorting bookmarks into categories automatically. Unfortunately, this project seems abandoned as well.

Other people have also been interested in the subject. I found a related blog post with links to some of the previously mentioned things and other ones. The post is from 2007 and the main conclusion seems to be that there isn't any service that could actually do this.
