Seems like a basic requirement to be able to add labels (just as I can add labels to the questions on SE)...why was this left out of the initial rollout of Trello?

Your second question isn't really a question the community can answer, only an employee can tell you that. To your first question Alex has gave an alternative. Try asking Trello either via Twitter or email. Closing this as off-topic. – phwd♦ Nov 20 '11 at 20:54
