I use my standard email address (Gmail) for my MSN account, rather than having a separate Hotmail address that would never be used. I use different passwords for the two accounts, even though the same email address is used.

If I log into my MSN account and navigate to Hotmail, it allows me to send messages. These appear as if I’d sent them from my email account. If my MSN account were compromised, it would allow spam to be sent from my address. I don’t recall ever authorizing MSN to actually use my email account except to have them email me if necessary. How can I disable or prevent this functionality, short of deleting my MSN account? And how are they doing it—are they simply spoofing my address?
