Web Applications Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for power users of web applications. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I want a service that will host content that is searchable, categorizable, and organized around answering questions that internal users create. A CMS for FAQs, essentially.

I also strongly prefer the following features (in order of preference):

  • The service allows me to embed videos.

  • The service allows me to upload pictures.

  • The service provides a means to search questions.

  • The service uses Markdown as its input format, preferably as its preferred input format.

  • The service costs money. (See, e.g., here for why that's important.)

I believe the reason it was closed is that prior research was not shown. "Off Topic: App recommendations unless prior research is shown". If you demonstrate the sites that have failed to meet your criteria for some reason or another, the question could be voted open again. – Myrddin Emrys Mar 20 '12 at 8:08

It sounds a bit like you want a Stack Exchange site. Unfortunately they no longer host private copies of Stack Exchange, but you could suggest the topic in Area 51.

But perhaps a Wiki might be a similar idea if you prefer something else. Wikipedia has a nice list of various Wiki hosting services that exist, both free and paid.

You could also try searching for Hosted Knowledge Base solutions, but I can't really say much about them, since I have never used one. It sounds like what you want however.

I don't really want a StackExchange -- the questions will be created by internal folks, and make public to everyone else. I suppose a Wiki is plausible, but it's also a lot of work to get set up and maintain. I literally just want questions, Markdown, and good searching, and I want to pay someone to do everything related to infrastructure. – John Feminella Mar 20 '12 at 1:11
@John Try searching for knowledge base hosting; that may be what you want. I don't know much about them though, sorry. – Myrddin Emrys Mar 20 '12 at 1:33
