I pressed return to make a new line in a cell of my Google docs spreadsheet.

That just moved to the next cell. How does one add a new line in a cell in a Google doc spreadsheet?

When you're focused on the cell press enter to get into edit mode:

  • Windows: Ctrl + Enter
  • Mac: Command/option(alt) + Enter

Thank you! That works reliably. – David Faux Apr 15 '12 at 3:12

Right click on the row number (left side) and select "insert 1 above" or "insert 1 below" as desired. Microsoft Excel works the same way.

That's not what is being asked about. The Asker wants to know how to add a newline in a cell. – Al Everett Dec 15 '12 at 2:24
