I got asked the other day by my 9 year old nephew if I could make him a website. He wanted a specific background image and a login/register button. When his friends login they could get promoted by my nephew.

I thought it was interesting that he had such a clear vision of this website, so now I'm looking around for some extremely simple/visual software to eventually build this on. Not really sure what I'm looking fore but I envision him looking at his website and when someone logs in there would perhaps be an icon he could interact/start a chat with.

Preferably this would be an open source software to install on your own host.

phpbb probably? Seems like standard community ware. You can also use wordpress with some community plugins.
