Researchers have found that friendships are more likely to last if both friends live near each other.[citation needed]

I'm using OkCupid, a free online-dating and friend-matching site. When I search for matches, OkCupid lets me filter the list of potential matches by proximity. But the closest proximity option is "within 25 miles of me". How can I search for matches who live within 5 miles of me?

They changed it back! Editing the second parameter of filter 3 to your desired radius in miles (I'm in the US), seems to work! –  user47640 Sep 13 '13 at 17:20

  • Click on the Matches button on the top navigation bar.
  • Click on your web browser's location bar.
  • Change the parameter which reads something like filter3=3,25 to filter3=3,5 (or, to select a distance other than 5 miles, enter a different number.)
  • You're done. OkCupid's filtering options will continue to show you your old filters. But don't worry: your new filter is already working.

[Edit: I have found that the above steps no longer have any effect.]

They have changed this now, entering your own custom number into the browser URL field does nothing. It is a real shame, who wants to find people within 25km of a high density city such as NY, where a 30km commute can take up to 7 hours? –  user45860 Aug 17 '13 at 10:17
@John: Indeed, I too have found that the steps no longer have any effect. Sad. –  tealhill Aug 25 '13 at 3:29
Dear all: Is there any way we can open a feature-request ticket with OkCupid? –  tealhill Aug 25 '13 at 3:30
@EightDaysofMalaise: I tried it again and it still doesn't work. –  tealhill Aug 25 '13 at 3:59
Tried your method and it did work (at least it did only show those within a five mile radius) so not sure what's going on. The current tags are fine, online-dating isn't really necessary –  Eight Days of Malaise Aug 25 '13 at 4:31
