How to stop getting friends status updates notifications on Facebook?

Question

I always get a message about my friends updating their statuses, but just from sertain people. It started I think with last "update"... but I do not want my notification to be all about "this person updated their status", I want to choose what to see myself. And this happend on my bf fb too, and we're so annoyed. But here's the thing, it says those people are all "close friends" but we both empty-ed our closefriends maps and put the notifications on -off- so I don't know what to do? Please, has someone else had that problem? What do do? Thank you
