Is there any service that provides accurate driving directions to a location at a specified time of the day? By that I mean the service should take into account the average traffic for that specific timeframe and route accordingly.

I am not looking for real time traffic. I want to be able to pre-plan my trip three days prior (in the evening)—the service should give me the best possible route on that day at that time.

Preferably looking for a service that works in Australia.

Google Maps offers drive time in current traffic and a view of traffic conditions on a given day, but unfortunately not drive time on a given day. It isn't automatic, but you can do some planning by seeing what the traffic would be like on a given day on possible alternate routes.

Updated 2014-06-21 - now features new and old Google Maps

New Maps

Head to new Google Maps and go to where you want to view traffic.

Clear the search box (yeah, the UX people were out that day).

Hover your mouse over the search area and underneath "Getting around" should appear with some options. Select "Traffic":

You can then select "Typical Traffic" and change the date/time of the traffic you are looking at:

Check out the map and try some different routes - avoid the red bits!

Old Maps

Head to old Google Maps and select your start and finish points as usual. Then select 'Traffic' from the dropdown at the top right: Traffic menu on Google Maps

You should then get a menu on the lower left of the map that allows you to change the date/time of the traffic you are looking at:

Check out the map and try some different routes - avoid the red and black bits!

AWESOME!! I didn't know about this feature. Thank you! :) – squashbuff Sep 20 '12 at 5:16
Now can you be magic and have them update the estimated travel time? :p – jcolebrand Nov 13 '12 at 1:50
No, Google does not allow you to change DATE of traffic you are looking at only an average of a week day. – user43175 Jul 4 '13 at 20:23
Any idea if this can still be done on the new Google Maps site and whether the estimated travel time can be obtained based on the new time? – Legend Jun 21 '14 at 1:10
@Legend I've updated the answer to include new Google Maps, it's a little different. Sadly still no predictive travel times yet - I think jcolebrand was right in saying you'd need some magic to do that! – John C Jun 21 '14 at 12:52
