Google has recently made SMS from within Gmail available in India, along with many other countries.

And supposedly, all Indian mobile carriers support it, but I’m still having trouble sending a simple SMS to myself:

As per the link you shared, not all Indian mobile carriers support it. Among the major ones, Airtel & Vodafone in some regions are missing from that list. That said, I've had the issue you mentioned with a supported provider and I hope it is temporary. – mvark Oct 13 '12 at 3:52

@Sathya Sorry, I didn't actually go through the link but I had seen that page when this feature was publicized a few days back and it mentioned only eight mobile service operators as this news article will confirm - ibnlive.in.com/news/… Airtel & Vodafone Karnataka were notable exclusions earlier. Google appears to have updated the page in the last couple of days. The service still doesn't work for several operators that I have tried with. – mvark Oct 14 '12 at 12:35
