Web Applications Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for power users of web applications. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I've been using Mockingbird for the past few months and like it, but I was wondering if there were better alternatives out there for doing quick prototyping/wireframing.

I removed the productivity tag and placed the mockups tag instead. I am not sure why you placed it there. –  phwd Jul 14 '10 at 15:22
You can also try iplotz, they have a limited free version –  Jeff Epstein Jul 14 '10 at 15:25
Thanks, I couldn't create new tags yet :( –  Wil Jul 14 '10 at 15:33
Looks not bad, but prefer completely free for now –  Wil Jul 14 '10 at 15:37
Make sure that answers are for web based solutions. If you are after desktop solutions then the question is off topic and should be reasked on Super User. –  ChrisF Jul 14 '10 at 15:37

I love balsamiq mockups: http://www.balsamiq.com/products/mockups

They've done a lot to speed up the work (shortcuts, smart functions).

Commercial, nice thing about Balsamiq Mockups though, it's free for "do-good"ers. –  miku Jul 14 '10 at 15:23
What do you mean free for do-gooders? Can't seem to find anything on that. –  Wil Jul 14 '10 at 15:35
If you are a non-profit, or doing non-profit work you can email them and ask for a license. But the webapp version that applies to this site is 100% free. You can export and everything. balsamiq.com/builds/mockups-web-demo –  drye Jul 14 '10 at 16:08
Looks good, but I can't seem to save there in that web demo. So while the tool looks good, doesn't seem to fit the free criteria. :) –  Wil Jul 14 '10 at 18:09
You can export XML and save it in a file on your desktop. –  Eduard Wirch Jul 15 '10 at 7:08

Take a look at The Pencil Project, it comes either as a standalone version or as a plugin for Firefox. I've used it a bit and works quite well.

Is this web based? Looks like a download tool. –  Wil Jul 14 '10 at 16:09
This is not really web-based, though if you install the plugin, you'll be doing the wireframing in your browser. –  mbillard Jul 14 '10 at 17:20

WireframeSketcher also offers some free options for do-gooders.

LucidChart is a web-based wireframing software that has a free option. You can use it for wireframing and rapid prototyping. Also has iPhone GUI elements in case you're prototyping an iPhone app.
