I wish to be able to enter the sizes (and name) of each room and then to able to quickly drag the rooms about to create a house plan. I then wish to add windows and doors.

Any items I have not provided at least two measurements for its location should be highlighted; likewise any measurements that contradict each other should be highlighted.

E.g if a wall has a door in it, I wish to provide

  • The length of the wall
  • The width of the door way
  • The distance between each end of the wall and the edge of the door way

You could try http://www.floorplanner.com/. It seems pretty popular and very easy to use

This looks good, however it does not seem to let me type in the dimensions of rooms and it does not seem to produce a table of room sizes. I also seem not be able to control witch dimensions are shown on the plan. Overall it looks like drawing tool that is aimed at drawing house plans, rather than a tool that will take a set of measurements and work out the house plan it’s self. – DoNotInstall Jul 19 '10 at 9:12

Try Autodesk Homestyler.

Is a free online home design software to create and share home design ideas for your dream kitchen, room addition or interior design project.

It's very easy to use and you don't even have to sign up in order to start building your house.

Autodesk is the company that built AutoCAD which is one of the most powerful software for architects and civil engineers.

This looks like a good tool to design your “deem home”, once again it does not seem to allow measurements to be typed in. It is funded by leading brands (e.g maker’s of doors) paying for items to be included in the pallet of chooses. – DoNotInstall Jul 19 '10 at 9:23
@Ian you can easily see the measurements.. If you want to be able to do all that maybe it's better to buy the whole thing :D After all it's the web.. and it's not for professionals.. :) Give it a shot and see some examples that they have in the gallery... it's actually pretty awesome thing! – Lipis Jul 19 '10 at 11:11

I know it's not a web app (yet) but I'd use Sketchup for something like this. Out of the box you can quickly draw the floorplan by yourself and if you have a need you can write a Ruby script (or get someone to write the script) that would take in measurments and draw the boxes for you and group them so they'd be easy to move around.
