Web Applications Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for power users of web applications. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Given only the ISBN number or the title of a book, how to collect more information about this book?

Bonus points for being able to do this via an API.

isbndb.com looks like a good candidate. It also has an API to query its databases. –  akira Jul 20 '10 at 6:19

There is a question about ISBN API also on Stackoverflow.

They mentioned:

The most efficient way is a web search restricted to Amazon.

For instance, in Google and searching for ISBN 1590596439:

site:amazon.com 1590596439

There is also an API, but I don't have any experience using it. A starting point could be "Merits of Amazon book API versus Google book API?".
