Web Applications Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for power users of web applications. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have a virtual machine running in VirtualBox. That machine is linked to Dropbox. Recently, said virtual machine has kicked the bucket. Fortunately, I have a backup, but not exactly recent one. Unfortunately, since the backup a lot of files in my Dropbox have changed and, of course, virtual machine (but not the backup) was kept is sync.

What will Dropbox do when I restart my virtual machine from that backup? Will it update the Dropbox folder on the virtual machine to the most recent version? Or will it revert the Dropbox folder to match the state of my virtual machine? Or maybe, it will refuse doing anything and declare my machine invalid?

I would expect it to update your VM to the latest versions as those files will be much older.
