With so many apps out there, how can I find useful ones? How do you find useful apps?

And how can I see which apps are the standouts (there generally isn't a best that first everyone, but there are usually a few from which an app can be chosen that suits the majority) in their category?

Yes & no to this one. Since it's entirely crowd sourced as far as categorizing pages you can miss out on quite a bit or wind up on pages that leave you questioning "How the **** does this fit into this category???" Also, if you have a lot of interests selected you can wind up squandering many hours with "just one more stumble..." –  Agent_9191 Aug 2 '10 at 22:43

alternativeTo has an interesting approach: you can choose an app and see other similar apps. The number of votes tell you if it stands out. (Of course, this would be unreliable for very recent apps.)
