I remember Google Maps often asking me if I wanted to use 'web gl'. When I said yes, it reloaded, and the web gl version had better zooming in and out. Today, I can't find the option for Web GL. Where is it? Did Google remove it?

AFAIK some browsers do not support Web GL. So, if you are using another browser, this option may be unavailable. Just guessing... – Deer Hunter Jun 23 '13 at 18:22
Could be. My browser is Google Chrome Version 28.0.1500.52 beta-m – Colonel Panic Jun 23 '13 at 18:40

If you want to enjoy new features of Google Maps such as browser integration with web-based Google Earth and WebGL visit the Meet the new Google Maps webpage and click the Try Now button to try the Google Maps Preview. The Google Maps Preview works best on either Google Chrome or Firefox.

This is not the only way to enable WebGL on Google Maps, but if you try it you might find that you like it better than the other version of Google Maps.
