Are there any? All that I've found are either missing tons of songs or are completely ad-filled.

Lyrics sites are basically illegal sites which violate copyright, so that may be why they also have such annoying adverts. – delete Aug 1 '10 at 7:54
if you install adblock plus for firefox you don't need to worry about ads... (other browsers have their equivalents). :D addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865 – Gordon Gustafson Aug 1 '10 at 15:06
Not a web app, but Songbird <getsongbird.com/>; has an extension that displays just the lyrics for the currently played song. I don't know how it does that, but it does work. – Nickolay Oct 1 '10 at 20:52

Nice one! Saw it a couple of weeks ago but forgot to post it here. :) – Ben Alpert Sep 15 '11 at 16:29

LyricWiki isn't too bad, but I agree that song lyric websites are generally a horrible ad-infested wasteland on the internet.

(this used to be lyricwiki.org)

I tried this link and was greeted by two "Play now Free forevers". – delete Aug 1 '10 at 7:49
@kino it's just a seedy corner of the internet, there are no winners in this bad neighborhood only varying degrees of losers. It was nicer when it was lyricwiki.org, too! – Jeff Atwood Aug 1 '10 at 18:39

Song Meanings isn't bad either, except for the occasional modal popup, and I think their layout looks less cluttered than most others.

They're also legal now! – joshuahedlund Aug 28 '12 at 20:45

When you say "missing tons of songs" - I guess you really mean obeying the law and not making unauthorised copies of lyrics that are still copyright.

If it's old songs that you're looking for, try http://dev.mudcat.org/

It turns out that Bing is building a lyrics database. You can just do a Bing search for something like metallica lyrics or metallica the unforgiven lyrics, and if you're lucky, the search-results page will have a little "Songs: metallica the unforgiven lyrics" section, containing an album-cover image and a list of songs next to it. (Sometimes this block appears at the top of the search-results page; sometimes, as in the case of both of the Metallica searches I noted, it's shown after the first handful of search results.)

If one of those songs has a "Lyrics" link next to it, you're in luck. Click the link, and you get a Bing page showing the lyrics. You're not linking to a third-party page with questionable ads and/or spyware; this is an actual page hosted by an actual Bing/Microsoft server.

Their database is hit-and-miss at this point -- they don't have any lyrics for local bands like Adelayda, and they're even spotty for major bands like Metallica (they have lyrics for The Unforgiven but not for Enter Sandman). But they do have at least halfway-decent coverage, and there are no evil pop-up ads.

And more interestingly, since it's being done publicly by a fairly major search engine, I think we can assume that it's all being done legally and with the proper agreements with the copyright owners.

Try http://amalgama-lab.com. No ads, 25k songs. A possible problem is that the site is in russian, but you can search it like http://www.google.ru/search?q=placebo+meds+site%3Aamalgama-lab.com. The site also contains translations of all songs into russian.
