What forum software is out there?

I've used PhpBB in the past, but that was a long time ago and I'm guessing there might be better stuff out there.

My requirements are:

  • registration required to post (name, email, password)
  • public viewing
  • some ability to customize
  • needs to look reasonably good (it's not for geeks)
  • hosted or self hosted
  • if self hosted it needs to be PHP & MySQL
  • free or paid

(I can't add tags, but I wanted to tag this "forums".)

This question appears to be off-topic. The users who voted to close gave this specific reason:

  • "Application/website recommendations are off-topic and out of scope. It is better instead to use a particular web app or website and ask for help in any issues you have with it specifically." – Al E., ᴡᴏʀᴅs, Rubén, Vidar S. Ramdal, Alex
If this question can be reworded to fit the rules in the help center, please edit the question.

This question might be better suited to Pro Webmasters as it's about managing your own application rather than using an existing application. – ChrisF Aug 10 '10 at 22:14
I'm good with either. But I can move it over there. – Darryl Hein Aug 10 '10 at 22:33

You won't find a more comprehensive list of online forum software than this one at wikipedia.

(You can order the list by how recently they were released by clicking on the small box in the "Latest release date" column on the first chart on the page. Apparently, MyBB's latest version of their software was released earlier this month.)
