  • Storage?
  • How to access data if not using the browser?
  • Folders? Labels? Tags?

Google Mail (aka Gmail)

  • About 7.5 GB of storage
  • IMAP/SMTP/POP3/Exchange ActiveSync access
  • Mobile access
  • Mail Forwarding
  • Ability to send from different addresses
  • Import from Outlook
  • Organization: Labels and IMAP Folders
  • Signup process may require SMS or Voice Call

Hotmail tells me "You have ever-growing storage." There's a link to the help that says "Windows Live Hotmail includes ever-growing storage to provide you with as much storage space as you need, provided that you send and receive a normal amount of e-mail. Your inbox capacity will automatically increase as you need more space." I don't pay for the service. My "SkyDrive" for photos and file storage allows up to 25GB. – Bernhard Hofmann Jul 1 '10 at 6:01

Fastmail

  • Up to 10 GB of storage
  • IMAP/SMTP/POP3/Web
  • Mail Forwarding
  • Ability to send from different addresses
  • Import from Outlook
  • One time passwords (for use in web-cafes)
  • This is a pay-for service.
  • File Storage space included with account
  • Family and Business Accounts (Multiple addresses on single domain)

Notes:

  • They have just been bought by Opera (As in Opera browsers)
  • I've been using them about 6 years.
  • They're really good.

Mailinator.com

  • Any address, any time
  • no passwords needed, but no privacy either
  • no signups

Plus, the mailinator blog has some really interesting approaches to system architecture.

  • Account deactivated after 4 months of inactivity

Yahoo! Mail Plus

  • Disposable Email Addresses
  • Forwarding

Of course, this is now replaced with iCloud, which is free (if you have a Mac or iPhone or other Apple device). It does include (nice) webmail as well as native apps already on your device created by the same company. iDisk is dead (hello, iCloud syncing and/or Dropbox instead). – Alan H. Nov 1 '11 at 2:16

I use Mail2Web which allows me to access my POP3 accounts and have a web access email. I also use Bigfoot for it's email handling capabilities.
