I’m trying to help a friend in his elections campaign. We mainly need a tool to manage a list of possible voters. We need to be able to:

  1. Easily update details about the voters, and

  2. Query for voters according to various parameters, and show and print the resulting lists

To enable campaigners to work from multiple workstations, we would like the system to be distributed, probably web based.

We would also like that to be in Hebrew, if possible.

Is there any existing tool that easily enables it? If not, can you recommend on an easy way to implement such a tool?

(I have a solid programming knowledge, but not much time to devote to that)

Edit: Any bug-tracking tool (like Bugzilla) would be suitable to the task as it also basically managed one shared database table (bugs). All I need is the ability to change the field of that table, so it will show voters instead of bugs. Do you have any idea?

How about using Google Docs? You could even create a web form that puts data into your sheet so that you could enter data that way instead of sharing the sheet directly. If it doesn't support all the filters you need, you could save it locally and manipulate it with excel after you've collected what you need.

If it was only for me, it would be great, but this is intended to various people in the campaign, which are not so skilled in spreadsheet editing. The web form is mainly for adding records, while I mainly interested in editing existing records, and filtering for records. I know this can be done in the Google spreadsheet, but I would like a more friendlier way, with forms. – splintor Sep 7 '10 at 5:21

We've just put up a Beta of a new easy online database tool that supports relational database web apps (Master / Detail records).

It sounds like it would be a good fit for a simple contact database (though not sure that you need master/detail tables - perhaps just a single voter table).

The site is http://www.rhythmdata.com.

All you need to do is tell it the names of the fields you want to collect and it generates the forms and sub-forms for you. There is no need to design the forms.

The Beta currently only runs in Firefox, but we're working on adding support for the other browsers now. It does not, unfortunately, support Hebrew at this time.

We would appreciate any feedback that anyone has to offer on our system.

Take a look at the Drupal Democracy forum. You may need to combine it with the Hebrew installation profile.

This doesn't seem to do what I want. I'm mainly interested in managing data about voters between several campaigners. I don't see this feature in the forum main features. Can you enlighten me? – splintor Sep 12 '10 at 18:24
I agree it doesn't do what you want. I was distracted by the use; an election campaign. Sounds like you really want something more like a customer or relationship management database. – Michelle Sep 12 '10 at 22:20

You can also use the Google Wave's pool gadget
