Alternative to Facebook

I don't like facebook's cowboy attitude toward privacy. I'd like to see a more open and privacy-respectful social network. Are there any good ones out there?

Also, can they integrate with my current facebook account? I doubt I'll convince all my friends to move to a different social network!!

This question has been asked before and already has an answer. If those answers do not fully address your question, please ask a new question.

Why do you want to move away from Facebook and on the other hand want your new account to be integrated with it? Then you're exposed to the privacy problems with Facebook again. – neo Sep 8 '10 at 13:42

Apparently, Diaspora should be launching within the next few weeks. Hardly any details have been published about it, but it claims to be an open-source, distributed Facebook competitor.

Take a look at The Fridge which is some sort of another kind of social network. It focuses around groups of people. Persons that are not in this group cannot see any information out of it (and don't even see that this group exists).
