What setting do I need to adjust or create to make the search in Google Chrome limit itself to a pre-defined set of websites?

For example, I want to search all the Stack Exchange sites (superuser.com, serverfault.com, stackoverflow.com, etc.) at once using the one query in the Google Chrome search bar.

How do I accomplish this?

Based on your reputation from other sites in the network, you should be able to get to 101 reputation by unlinking your account and then linking them back up. This should give you a 100 point reputation bonus. – firedfly Oct 13 '10 at 21:04

How to do this by setting up a custom search on Google Chrome:

1. Go to www.google.com

2. Do a search for +(site:stackexchange.com AND site:superuser.com AND site:stackoverflow.com) stuff) (Add in your other favorites to this list.)

3. Search. Copy the URL from the search results. It should look something like this:

(http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&hl=en&q=%2B(%22site%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fstackoverflow.com%2F+OR+site%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fsuperuser.com%2F+OR+site%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fserverfault.com%2F+OR+site%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Faskubuntu.com%2F)+**stuff**&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&pbx=1&fp=fd11ff3f5ad97304)

4. Now click the "wrench" icon in Chrome and go to Options > General options > Default search > Manage.

5. "Add new..." and enter name + keyword and paste in the above URL. (Ex: name:stack exchange, keyword:stacksearch)

6. Replace the word "stuff" with "%s".

7. Go to search bar and type in (keyword) + TAB. Search.

Voila! Stack exchange custom search!

Please post any better answers here, i imagine there's a plugin somewhere that can do this.

You could use: stackexchange.com/search?q=%s instead of the google url. – firedfly Oct 13 '10 at 21:11

The stackoverflow blog has a good post on this topic. The easiest way seems to be going to stackexchange.com and using the search box at the top of the page. It will search all stack exchange sites.

by using the search box do you mean importing that box into chrome directly, as you can do in opera by right clicking and choosing 'add search'? it doesn't seem so, in which case you haven't answered the question at all, but i'm new to this site hence can't downvote yet. – ixtmixilix Oct 14 '10 at 1:05
When I answered the question, it was more open ended. I was answering how to search all the sites independent on the browser used. The question has since been refined to specify searching via Chrome's omnibar. – firedfly Oct 14 '10 at 3:05
