I know about various backup/sharing apps like Dropbox, SugarSync, etc., but what I'm interested in is a service that isn't intended as backup, but rather is intended to serve as my filesystem and even computing environment. For example, I could log into a unix account through my browser, edit files, do software development, etc.

I know this is probably not what you are really looking for, but considering that I don't think that currently exists, what about placing a machine at home to use strictly for remote access? For example, you could set up your software development environment, etc on this machine, then just access it through any browser via LogMeIn or an equivalent. Since that machine could be on your own network, you could manage backups/syncing between other machines on your network if you want. Just a thought. |

I'm interested in these sort of things as well, as for filesystem Amazon S3 seems to be a popular choice along with Dropbox that you have mentioned yourself. Not a webservice in it by itself, yet, but shell-in-a-box provides the software to run one. I have managed to run 256 colors emacs on it which is way cool!! |
