Is there any way to automatically start an "offline chat" mode when an invisible contact is clicked rather than the default of "Compose Mail"?

There is absolutely no way to do that, as that's the whole point of being "Invisible" - no one knows that you are online. Suppose, things were like as you ask about in this question:

  1. You get to online chat when you click on an online user.
  2. You get to offline chat when you click on an online user who has set himself as invisible.
  3. You get to Compose Mail when you click on an offline user.

Then, clicking on the invisible user will lead to the Offline Chat and you will know that the user is actually online - thus contradicting the very meaning on invisible.

You can have the offline chat with an invisible user only if the invisible user starts the chat with you when you are online and visible.

Re "only if the invisible user starts the chat with you" - This is not the case. You can initiate an "offline chat" with a user by mousing over their name and clicking "offline chat". Additionally, you immediately find out if they are online and invisible or actually offline by the helpful message you get in response automatically. It is either "$USER is offline and can't receive messages" or "Messages you send will be delivered when $USER comes online." – WAF May 6 '12 at 1:26

Because what I am looking for is a way for this to happen automatically rather than defaulting to sending them an email when you click on the contact's name in the left-hand column. – WAF May 29 '12 at 21:51
