My son has an X-Box Live account tied to his Windows Live account. He's 16-years-old.

Console safety is off, on the X-Box. However, whenever he tries to go to Facebook or ESPN, it prompts him to authenticate with my username. If I enter my Windows Live password, it lets him through.

I think when we first created him an MSN Messenger account, like, seven years ago, we tied it to my Windows Live account.

I've searched up and down the X-Box and my Windows Live account, and I can't figure out how to break this association. How do I make his Windows Live (or X-Box Live) account self-sufficient and not dependent on my Windows Live account?

You can change the associated Windows Live Account by following these steps:

To change your Windows Live ID

  • On your Xbox 360 console, sign in using your Xbox LIVE gamertag.

  • Go to My Xbox, and select your avatar.

  • In the Account Management panel, select Manage Account.

  • In the Your Information panel, select Windows Live ID.

  • Select Change Windows Live ID.

  • If you have another Windows Live ID, select Yes, I do.

If you do not have another Windows Live ID, go to http://login.live.com/ to sign up for a Windows Live account.

Note Your Microsoft Points balance will automatically be transferred to the new Windows Live ID.

  • Enter the password for the Windows Live ID that is currently associated with your gamertag, and then select Sign in.

  • Enter the e-mail address and the password for the new Windows Live ID that you want to associate with your gamertag, and then select Sign in.

  • Select Yes, change to change the Windows Live ID associated with your Xbox LIVE account.

  • Select Update Contact Information to update your contact information or select Done to finish.
