How are the lines on HTML element hierarchy plots in Wolfram|Alpha generated?

Wolfram Alpha provides HTML element hierarchy plots for web sites.

For an example, enter a popular website, like stackoverflow.com into the field:

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=stackoverflow.com

And the generated HTML element graphic at the bottom of the results may look like this:

What criteria is used to determine the length and direction of the lines which connect the different elements?
