I'm learning Japanese, but struggling with hiragana / katakana (not to mention kanji). I have acquired the last 2 foreign languages mostly via auditorily learning (english, and german) -since they were using the same charset as my native language, it worked; however, this method fails miserably, when there's a large amount of images to be root-learned.

Thus, my question to the webapps community: what apps would you recommend in improving my visual recall / memory for the long term?

Thanks

Also not free, but http://iknow.jp/ has a good flashcard like program for learning Japanese. Try http://iknow.jp/content/japanese and you can take a free trial for hiragana or katakana.

N.B. I don't think the free trial will be enough to learn all the kana, but it will give you a sense of how their system works and if it will work for you. – Thunder Rabbit May 13 '12 at 0:55

It's not free, but take a look at http://www.lumosity.com/

Note that this is a very general app designed to "improve brain performance" overall, it's not a language-learning service.

Luminosity as a whole is geared towards overall brain performance, however, specific exercises exist towards specific functions, such as visual memory. – rlb.usa Aug 12 '11 at 23:36
Also, Luminosity has a free trial period. It doesn't unlock everything, but it does include visual memory exercises. – rlb.usa Aug 12 '11 at 23:36
