How can one format a cell to have wordwrap in Google Spreadsheets?

I've tried Shift+Enter, but that doesn't seem to work.

One thing I know works is to place the Spreadsheet into List Mode and then if you edit your cell you can have wordwrap in it.

But is there a way to do this without switching Modes?

Google Spreadsheets should automatically wrap text when the content exceeds the width of the cell.

If not, you should be able to see a button on the toolbar to Wrap Text. Hit that when focus is on the cell you want to wrap text for.

Alternatively you can force a linebreak in the cell with Ctrl + Enter.

The wrap text button will only work if you happen to have white space in your data. I have been keeping track of long URL's in my cells and the wrap text button will not work in that case. My only option is to force a break (Apple Key + Enter, in my case), which breaks the URL, making a quick copy and paste into a browser difficult. Sadly, there is no apparent method for having a long URL wrap automatically depending on the width of the cell.

Word wrap does work on non-white-space content. A long URL should wrap without having to manually break the line. – OnenOnlyWalter Oct 25 '12 at 14:48

An alternative to pasting just the long URL is to make a hyperlink - text that has a specific web address attached to it. By writing a short text word and turning this word into a hyperlink to your preferred URL works well.
