comment Can I “opt out” of Google Calendar while keeping my Gmail account?
See my updated answer to remedy your cited concern. However, it is extremely unlikely that you'll manually click "Accept" in the middle of the body of an invitation email. Additionally, you'll want to send all future emails from calendar-notification@google.com to spam, just in case.

I see. Well following these steps will ensure that the concerns in your question won't happen. Your best bet is to contact Google directly. And good luck with that. ;)

Which version of OS X are you using? You can disable calendar syncing and telling us which version you are using would help us explain or refer you to the correct instructions.

It would help if your question were more clear. When you refer to "opting out" or "disabling" Google Calendar, do you mean (1) on your Mac (iCal) or (2) opting out of the service entirely, such that your Google Account does not have Google Calendar?

comment Searching GMail for emails where I am one of many recipients
You have to first turn on Personal Level Indicators in Gmail's settings, like I had written above. Then you will see them. mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=8156
