I have a spreadsheet that looks like this:

+---------------------------------------+
| |01|02|03|04|05|06|07|08|09|10|11|12|
+---------------------------------------+
|'16| ?| ?| ?| 1| 2| ?| ?| ?| 4| ?| 4| ?|
+---------------------------------------+
|'17| ?| 5| ?| ?| 4| ?| 5| 6| 7| ?| ?| ?|
+---------------------------------------+
|'18| ?| ?| 7| ?| 5| 6| 7| ?| 8| ?| ?| ?|
+---------------------------------------+
|'19| ?| ?| ?| 9| 9| ?| ?| 8| ?| 9| ?| ?|
+---------------------------------------+

Each column is a month (1-12). Each row is a year (2016-2019, the years are fixed).

The cells represent numerical values (for example, my bank account balance in the given month of the given year). If the value is unavailable for that month (data hasn't been recorded), there's a "?" string.

Based on this data, I would like to have a line chart representing value-over-time. Y axis is value and X axis is time (both year and month, e.g 01-16, 02-16, ... 12-19).

The X axis (time) should start at the first month when data is available and end at the last month when data is available. When data is unavailable in between, the line should simply continue straight.

How can I go about doing this?

  • you want value over time of what? over year time? over month time? or over year&month time? – user0 May 15 at 18:14
