I'm new to this, so I've posted this question as an "answer" to this post QUERY error for BY column

a previous solution for this issue no longer works, and I need a new way to tell google (via code) that I want it to select columns A - CC, including the BY column. Since BY is an identifier, I get an error message. Surrounding BY with single or double quotes does not work either.

  • Welcome. Please add more details like how did you try to apply the solution proposed in the answers to the referred questions including some sample input/output data. – Rubén Dec 7 '19 at 3:14
  • Welcome. Just to be clear, the previous answer (and the method described by the documentation) is/was that it must be surrounded by back-quotes (not single quotes). – Tedinoz Dec 7 '19 at 11:28
  • This was a VERY simple test but Column BY works for me when you enclose it in back quotes. For example "=query(BX1:BY6,"select count(BX),BY group by BY")". Notice how the markdown highlights BY because it is in backquotes. – Tedinoz Dec 7 '19 at 11:36
  • Just to note that Markdown refers to ""backticks" - but it is the same thing as a backquote- the key to the left of numeral one and under the "ESC" key on a PC keyboard. – Tedinoz Dec 7 '19 at 11:44
  • Thank you so much!!! Apologies for being a real beginner -- the backtick does work, and the single quote no longer works (for some reason it did for about 2 years). Thank you all! – Jill Battal Dec 13 '19 at 17:38
