1 In a Reply window containing text and image, Select All and Copy.

2 In another Reply window, Paste

e.g.

enter image description here

3 Print.

Expected: Image included

Observed: Image lost - shows broken graphic icon and "image.png"

4 Send, and view sent message.

Anyone know a workaround in Gmail, short of screen-capturing and pasting each affected image?

The problem is that doing copy/paste doesn't upload the whole underlaying message content to Gmail server, so the Gmail print API hasn't access the temporary image used to render the messages in your web browser.

Options:

  1. Download the image or get the image URL then replace the images in the new message by the downloaded image or by using insert by URL. For details about how to download images in Gmail messages see Open & download attachments in Gmail.

  2. Save the message as Template. If you have not done yet, you will have to enable the template feature first in your Gmail account. Once the templete feature is enabled, save the content as a templete, then insert it in the new message from templates.

  3. (This one not always work, it might depends on how the image was added among other factors ) Copy the message first to a word processor. It might be Google Docs, then copy the content from the document to the new message.

There are other options.

The problem occurs because email messages convert the attachments and images to special format in order to be work with the SMTP protocol used by the email systems to communicate between them. So when you open an message with inline images Gmail converts the special format in temporary source files that the web browser can handle but those source files aren't available for the Gmail print API.

  • "email messages convert the attachments and images as in a special format in order to be work with the SMTP protocol" That's no impediment. "temporary source files ... aren't available for the Gmail print API" Got to wonder how Google thought that would not be a problem.

  • Regarding 1 you have to mouse hover other the image, some buttons will be displayed to download, add the image to Google Drive and print, I think. Mar 19 at 22:18
