I want to sort my email in Gmail by the sender, rather than the date received, is there a way to do this?

  • Why do you want to sort by sender? Are you looking for one sender in particular? Why not just search for them?

@x3ka - I want to be able to read through email from a group of senders, but I want to see each sender's emails co-located in the list rather than ordered by date.

  • function sort(){$mails = jQuery(document).xpath("//tr[td/div/span[@email]]"); $mails.tsort("td.yX>div.yW>span",{attr:'email'}); } works on the UI only. Selection is creating problem

  • @x3ja Being able to sort by sender is useful when clearing out your inbox. I'm down to 93 unread emails. I'd like to cluster them by sender, so when I go through them if there are 2-3 by the same sender I can archive them all at the same time. In the 93 emails there are about 30 different senders. I can "Filter messages like these", but most of the emails remaining only have 1 result. And doing this requires 4 or 5 mouse clicks per email. If emails could be sorted by sender this would be so much faster.

  • Was user suggestions completely removed? All I can find now is help documents, and "Post to the help community" which doesn't seem relevant.

If you really need to do this, one way is to download your messages into Thunderbird, for example, and sort them there. Google has a philosophical objection to sorting (except for reverse chronological order by last activity, of course) and is unlikely to implement this anytime soon.
