I was checking my email on my phone, and for some reason it glitched out and marked every single of my thousand emails unread. Is there any way I can mark all emails as read as once instead of doing 50 or 100 at a time?

If you go to the "All Mail" view from a computer (not sure how the mobile version works) and click the 'select all' checkbox, a little notification saying something like "All 50 conversations on this page are selected. Select all 24,037 conversations in All Mail" should appear, where the last part is a link. If you click that link, then click 'Mark as Read,' it should take care of the problem.

@inherithandle It's in the folder list, near Spam, Trash, Sent Mail, etc. – hBy2Py Feb 9 '18 at 12:07

This should be done in a desktop browser (not mobile)

  1. Enter the following in the search bar at the top of Gmail page "is:unread"

  2. Click "select all" (checkbox above the list of messages in upper left)

  3. Click the hyperlink in the text that pops up in the "All 100 conversations on this page are selected. Select all 56,315 conversations in All Mail"

  4. Click the "Mark As Read" button on the top.

Can someone confirm this still works in 2017? I can't get this to work -- the popup no longer shows this as an option for me? It just gives me an option to Undo. – aug May 23 '17 at 0:43

Okay update I found out depending on what Inbox setting you are at, you may not get the option. Specifically, make sure you are in Default Inbox setting and not Priority First (the setting I was in) – aug May 23 '17 at 1:21
  • Worked in 2017 as explained. – kalan Nov 26 '17 at 13:33

The offer to select conversations beyond 100 displays only when I go into "All Mail" view and then choose "Select all" using the drop down. When I start in any kind of a filtered view, the offer does not display for me. So yes, following the instructions to the letter, this worked for me in 2018. – John Meyer Jan 22 '18 at 17:34

In 2018 I can only display up to 100 E-Mails per page, so I can't mark them all as read at once, but since I only had about 650 unread E-Mails it was doable this way anyway. – Alex Sep 19 '18 at 12:42
